Thanksgiving swing dancing at the Denver Airport!

Thursday, December 15th, 2011

Can you imagine being at the airport getting ready to fly out on the busiest travel day of the year and all of a sudden you hear swing music over the loudspeaker and young people start dancing swing?  That is what happened a few days before Thanksgiving at Denver International Airport.

We lived in Denver for 15 years and I still have family there so fly back several times a year.  From now on in my mind I will always see those swing dancers at Jeppesen Terminal.  I thought it was so much fun to see these young people dancing to swing music.  I hope you enjoy it as much as I did!!

Our Alaskan vacation - flying around Mt. McKinley

Our Alaskan vacation - flying around Mt. McKinley

I have to be honest when my husband came up with the idea of flying around Mt. McKinley I was not sure about the whole idea.  I decided to buck up and WOW what an INCREDIBLE experience!  (I did have my bible study praying that I would have a peace that transcended understanding and I did have that peace.)  We only had a few days of beautiful clear skies and we were blessed to have one of those days.

Cold Facts to save your Spring-Tomball-Magnolia TX foliage!

Cold Facts to save your Spring-Tomball-Magnolia TX foliage!

Last year the Houston Chronicle had a great article about plant survival in freezing temperatures. Since it is almost February I was thinking I was going to get away without having to post about this but it is not to be; we are looking to have several days of frigid temperatures starting tomorrow (lows in the low to mid 20′s). Here in Houston we rarely have frigid temperatures and for sure not several days in a row. I love all the tropical plants that I’m able to grow in Spring and by using what they said I saved my plants last year and plan to again this year.  This year I also have a winter garden going and I sure don’t want to lose my lettuce.

After reading the article I realized that I’ve not been going at this correctly. What you want to do is mulch, water and cover. If it has not rained you need to water first which I had to do last year but this year we have had rain. Water and mulch should be enough for certain plants. Those plants would be abelia, azalea, boxwood, eleagnus, Hawthorne, holly, ligustrum, loropetalum, mahonia, nandina, roses, wax myrtle and yaupon. After an extended freeze these shrubs will probably show foliage damage without cover but should put on new leaves in the spring.

We went the extra step covering plants with fiber row covers, sheets & blankets. This will raise the temperature a few degrees depending on the cover. For even extra protection we added a layer of heavy plastic over the cloth covers and secured it with bricks and stones. The article said not to place plastic directly on the plants. (This is where I have been going astray). My plants are again double wrapped and I feel that again I will have healthy plants after the cold snap. Of course we have moved our potted plants inside.

Protecting your plants from cold weather in Spring TX!!

Protecting your plants from cold weather in Spring TX!!

Do not wash frost or ice off the plants the morning after the freeze. If you wash the frost off it raises the temperature too fast and can damage the plant’s cell tissue. After the frigid temperatures are over  assess the damage but DO NOT prune. The freeze damaged wood will protect live wood farther down the branch (should we have more frigid temperatures).

In the spring prune to green at your normal pruning time. I have always heard mid February for pruning.

I hope this is it for our frigid weather. We have lived here 14 years and I don’t ever remember covering plants this late in the season. I remember a radio commentator years ago saying we have two seasons in Houston summer and January. It looks like winter is going in to February for us this year. Hopefully this will be the last time to cover the plants.

Christmas tips from John G. Miller

Christmas tips from John G. Miller

The article below is written by John G. Miller the author of  ”Outstanding!:  47 Ways to Make Your Organization Exceptional.  He gives some excellent suggestions on how to make your Christmas hassle free.  I received this in an email from a friend but wanted to share it and below he says to share with a friend so that is what I’m doing.

Here’s the article:

Outstanding Holidays Don’t Just Happen

The holidays.

A season all about Family, Faith, and Friends. For many, it’s also a time of Food, Football, Festivities, Fun—and Freedom. Not just the blessing of living in a “free country,” but also maybe—just maybe—a little less tied to our jobs and a little more sleeping, puttering, and simply doing nothing on some days! Sounds great, doesn’t it?

But how about these words? Frenetic—a crazy, stress-filled pace. Finances—jubilant joy leads to dangerous debt. Frustration—things don’t quite go the way we planned. Fear—of being alone, left out. Fatigue—we simply do too much and return in January needing the month just to recover!

The reality is this: The holidays, for lots of people, just aren’t what they’re cracked up to be. Though we want them to stand out—that is, to be outstanding—they often fall short of our expectations. But, with some work, some discipline, and some adherence to fundamental ideas and principles, we can each experience an exceptional season.

By extracting concepts from the book Outstanding!—yes, written for the world of corporations, nonprofits, government entities, churches and schools—and applying them to this time of year, we can make the best of the holidays. And since most holiday celebrations involve families—which are organizations—let’s utilize the essences of nine of the 47 Outstanding! chapters to create a stellar season!

Choose to Change: Holiday traditions are great, but remember: Any strength taken to an extreme becomes a weakness. Outstanding families, like outstanding organizations, are willing to set aside “the way we’ve always done things” now and then. Keeping the end goals of joy, fun, and celebration in mind, we might need do things differently. Never forget: Blessed are the flexible, for they cause others to not get bent out of shape!

Keep the Mission Top of Mind: If you believe the “reason for the season” is faith (worshiping God and being thankful) and/or family (traditions and coming together) then don’t forget the “Why” behind the activities. Let purpose come before tasks, otherwise, the tasks can overwhelm the mission—and what’s the sense in that?

Get Actions In Line With Values: If we espouse values like love, caring, and acceptance, let’s ensure that our behaviors support those ideas. Integrity—actions in line with stated values—is a rare commodity in our world, so let’s allow that light to shine at home. Example: If we embrace the word “humility,” let’s avoid boasting, bragging, and topping each other in our interactions. Another: If I say I believe in relaxing and resting, then draw a few boundaries and say NO! if you really want to. It’s okay to not participate in some activities this time of year.

Fight the Fat: And we’re not talking about calories here! As Dave Ramsey says, when it comes to finances, “Bother to bother.” In other words, decide to stay on top of and in control of the dollars. By cutting up the plastic money and living within our means, we’ll experience a far more joyous … January!

Forgive Mistakes: What could be a more perfect way to achieve outstanding holidays than to let some stuff slide? Humans sometimes do say the wrong thing, make mistakes, exercise poor judgment, drop the ball, and forget to act. When these things happen, it’s an amazing opportunity to choose forgiveness. Practice the words, “No big deal. Let’s forget it.”

Let Every Player Count: A little lifting up of each person is a good thing. Careful that one individual’s needs and agenda don’t “rule the roost.” Let’s do our best to help each person—from 2 to 92—feel special. It’s a time to honor everyone on the team!

Speak Well: “A gentle answer turns away wrath, but a harsh word stirs up anger.” (Proverbs 15:1) So true! As the tension and stress build, make sure that the way we talk to others—both our words and tone—is encouraging, loving, and supportive.

Listen In All Directions: In Outstanding! we write about listening in three ways: Management listening to the people, the people listening to each other, and everyone listening to the customer. My favorite part is where we take “multi-tasking” to task as a very bad habit. During these precious days, let’s set the iPods, laptops, and PDAs aside—cease the Tweeting, status updating, and surfing—and look each other in the eye, saying, “Go ahead, you are the most important person in my world at this moment and I want to hear every word you have to say.”

Someone Needs to Be the Boss: Lastly, parents, I beseech you—please parent! Family gatherings are hurt when the wrong people are in charge: the children. Let’s hold our kids to a new (yet old fashioned) level of respect, manners, and courtesy. The truth is, it’s not all about the children—and sometimes they need to know that. If your young child needs a really long “time out,” then take action. Don’t be afraid to let him or her know that—surprise, surprise!—you are the boss.

So there they are: Nine ways to have an outstanding holiday season. Share this with others—apply them yourself—and see what a difference they can make. And then come back in 2011 ready to make our organizations outstanding, too!

The Lord’s bounty from around the world!!

Thursday, November 25th, 2010

As we celebrate this Thanksgiving day I thought it would be a good time to share the Lord’s bounty from around the world. When I say around the world I mean it literally. Our daughter is a flight attendant for a Charter company and mainly flies Internationally. As she travels the world she takes pictures and puts them on her Flickr site. These are an array of pictures from her site. The company she works for has one of the contract to move our troops so most of the places in the pictures are places where we have troops.

I hope you have a wonderful Thanksgiving!

My Dad – My Hero!!

Harry Gifford in World War II

Harry Gifford in World War II

As I am posting this my Dad is on an Honor flight to Washington DC to visit the World War II Memorial and other sites. I have always wanted to take my Dad to visit the memorial but could never figure out the logistics. I read about an honor flight somewhere on Active Rain and decided to do a Google check and see if there was anything like that in the Denver area.

Sure enough I found the Rocky Mountain Honor Flight.  I printed off the applicationand put it in the mail to him.  The honor flight is a non profit 501 C3. Shortly after receiving his application they called him and told him that the flights this fall were fairly full but when they found out that he was in World War II for almost 5 years, was at the Battle of the Bulge is now 93 years old and is totally ambulatory they found a space for him.  It worked out great.  My Mother’s 85th birthday was on the 14th so he was able to spend her birthday with her and then take off for his weekend.  He leaves Friday morning and gets back on Sunday evening.  They have another flight the middle of October but that would not have worked out as they leave for their winter home in Mesa Arizona on October 11th.

You heard me right my Dad at 93 years of age and my Mother at 85 years of age still spend 6 months in Colorado and 6 months in Arizona. My Dad drives them back and forth and I would get in the car with him any day. He is still an incredible driver. He got a lot of practice during World War II as it was his job to drive a supply truck to the front line. He would drop the kitchen off and then would spend the rest of the time taking troops back and forth to the front line. He said that often he would get where he was going only to find that the front line had been moved. In the video below he describes one of my favorite stories. To be honest he did not take about the war until just the past few years and that was with a lot of prodding on our part.

I was amazed to find out that he was drafted in to the Army prior to Pearl Harbor. I only found that out a few years ago. He had 4 brothers and called them and told them if they wanted to choose the branch of the service thatthey wanted to be in they had better go ahead and enlist.

Gifford boys in World War II

Gifford boys in World War II

Two of them were in the Army, two were in the Air Force and one was in the Navy. All of them came home safe and sound but my Dad’s oldest brother stayed in the reserves and at the time was told he would not be called up and if he was would not go to the front line. As it turns out that was not true and he died on the front lines in the Korean War. My Dad was the second to the oldest and is the only one of his siblings that is still living. He also had an older sister.

The entire time that my Dad was in the Army he did not receive any letters from home. My Grandparents were doing all they could to survive and back then there was of course not Internet access and even letters were not something that made it to the front line. My parents are from the same small town in Kansas but when he left for the war by Mother was just a young girl. He does not know about this but we have all written letters to him and Sunday on the way back home they will be having a mail call and he will finally be receiving letters from home thanking him for his service.

We are by no means a military family but we are a family with a long history of serving our country when needed. Between my husband’s family and my family my daughter and I figured out that we had had someone in almost every war since the Revolution. The only one that we could not come up with was the War of 1812. The most recent addition to that history is our son who served as an Intelligence Analyst with the Army. He was in for the same length of time as my Dad 4 years 10 months serving two tours of Iraq.

Harry and Lucylle Gifford and their girls

When my Dad came back from the war my Mother was all grown up and the rest is history. They have now been married for almost 63 years. This weekend will be the first time they have been separated for any length of time since I can’t remember when.

I have been blessed to have wonderful parents. I always say I had an Ozzie and Harriet upbringing and I’m so blessed to still have them.

My thoughts on Memorial Day!!

Sunday, May 24th, 2009

Memorial Day 2009My thoughts on Memorial Day have been an evolving experience.  As a child I remember thinking WOO HOO Memorial Day is here and we are out of school for the summer.  I do however remember that my parents always went and decorated graves so I did know it was a time to honor our dead.

When our children were little I still had those thoughts of Memorial Day.  I did however expect it to be a holiday where my children got out of school.  We lived a few years in another state and when my children had to go to school on Memorial Day I was appalled and ended up calling the Superintendent of the school district.  (In retrospect I was appalled that they had to go to school on a National Holiday but at that point didn’t really know much about why it was a holiday).

That was when I found out of the origins of Memorial Day.  It was actually started as a Northern Holiday after the Civil War.  It was after World War I that it officially became a holiday to celebrate those who died not just in the Civil War but Tarren Peterson in Hit Iraqany war.  It was in 1971 with the National Holiday Act it became a three day weekend celebrated on the last Monday in May.  I was surprised that the school district we were in at that time did not have the day as one of their recognized holidays.  That may have changed as we left that area 12 years ago.

My nonchalant attitude about Memorial Day continued as our children graduated from High School.  In our school district graduation would always take place on the Saturday of Memorial weekend.  Our son graduated in 2004 and immediately joined the Army.  This was when I really learned the meaning of Memorial Day.   He ended up serving 3 years of Foreign Service with two of those years being over in Iraq.  I must say this will bring the meaning home to you.

As I was preparing this post I did some research and came across this History of Memorial Day.  Wow did this post go along with what I just wrote.  I was writing about my own nonchalant attitude and then read in this post As the VFW stated in its 2002 Memorial Day address: Changing the date merely to create three-day weekends has undermined the very meaning of the day. No doubt, this has contributed greatly to the general public’s nonchalant observance of Memorial Day.”  It appears that my nonchalant attitude was more the norm than the exception.

Our son just got out of the Army May 2nd.  That has made me very introspective about this Memorial Day.  We were one of the lucky ones as he came back without injuries.

We are not necessarily a military family but do have a long record of serving our country.  My Dad and all of his brothers were in World War II at the same time.  (That’s my Dad second to the right.)  Two were in the Army, two were in the Air Force and one was in the Navy.  My family was blessed; they all came home.  My Uncle Myrl who was the one way to the right in the picture was the only one who stayed in the reserves and he ended up getting killed in the Korean conflict.  The rest of the brothers all lived to old age; my Dad is the only sibling whom is still living.

My husband’s Grandfather served in World War I.  In our Game room we have a picture of his unit before they deployed and under it a picture of those that came back.  I have not actually counted how many came back but it is about half of those that left.   I also have a flag with 48 stars in a ceremonial container that was given to my Great-Grandfather.  He Freedom is not FREE!!fought in the Civil War but my Mother told me he lied about his age to get in.  In that same room I have a picture of our son while he was in the Army and a picture of my Dad from back when he was in the Army. This is in the room where I have my elliptical machine and I have been trying to exercise 4 to 5 times a week so these have become a visual reminder for me of my family serving their country.  These visual reminders have made me realize how fortunate our family is that they all lived through their service.

Thank God we don’t have as many casualties in this war as in previous wars but we have a huge amount of our soldiers who are coming back injured and maimed.  I just had an email come across about a local soldier who has lost both legs and they thought also both arms and burnt over 56% of his body.  His family is asking for as many soldiers and veterans as possible to send him a birthday card.  You can go to “Chandlers Watch” and get the address.  This is a recent post so you still have time to send a card.

My nonchalant attitude about Memorial Day has disappeared!  Freedom is not FREE!  We owe a debt of gratitude to those whom have paid the ultimate sacrifice so we can be free.  We also owe a debt of gratitude to our returning soldiers.

In doing my research for this post I ran across an idea I really like.  Perhaps we need to go back to our traditional celebration of Decoration Day on May 30th.  We could always have our three day weekend over Armed Forces Day which is the 3rd Saturday of May.  This would be a way to put the emphasis back on what Memorial/Decoration Day was meant to stand for.

First-Time Homebuyer $8000 tax credit!

Tuesday, April 7th, 2009

Spring TX first time homebuyer $8000 tax creditThere is no better time to buy a home than right now, especially if you are a first time home buyer.  The good news is that you can be a first time home buyer a second time. (nothing like a second chance). So even if you have owned a home in the past you may be qualified to receive this $8000 tax credit.  When I first read about the tax credit I took it very literally to mean you must be a first time home buyer.  However in the case the definition of a first time home buyer for the purpose of this law is “a first time home buyer is a buyer who has not owned a principal residence during the three year prior to the purchase (the date on the HUD 1 is the determining factor).  For married taxpayers neither spouse may have owned a home in the last 3 years.

I recently had a closing where my client had previously had a home but had gone through a divorce and was just now able to buy a home again.  I called her to let her know that she was again a first time home buyer.  She was excited to know about this because just like me she thought a first time home buyer was only a first time home buyer.

There are a few other items that you should keep in mind.  This only goes to Dec. 1st 2009 so if you are going to buy a home this year you need to shop early.  You don’t want to wait until the last moment and then take the chance of not closing on time and losing out on the tax credit.

There are income limits.  Full credit will be issued to individuals with an adjusted gross income of no more than $75,000 ($150,000 on a joint return).  Individuals with incomes over $95,000 ($170,000 on a joint return) will not receive the credit.

Unlike the 2008 credit (which was essentially an interest free 15 year loan) the 2009 tax credits DOES NOT have to be repaid.  You do however have to live in the house for at least 3 years.

This is a tax credit, not a tax deduction.  A tax credit is a dollar for dollar reduction in the amount of tax the taxpayer owes.  If you owed $8000 in federal income tax and received the full $8000 tax credit, you would owe nothing to the IRS for that filing period.

This tax credit is said to be refundable.  This means that a credit can be claimed even if the taxpayer has little or no income tax liability to offset.  For example if a first time homebuyer had a tax liability of $6000 and received a tax credit for $8000 you would receive a check for $2000.

The finite points of the tax credit are still being worked on.  You will want to check with your tax advisor for a complete interpretation.
