Icicle Fountain in Spring TX!!

Thursday, February 10th, 2011

Like the rest of the country we are experiencing freezing temperatures in Spring TX. I was opening a home for a buyer to take some measurements this afternoon and drove by this fountain on the way to the home. This is Spring TX we are not supposed to be having freezing temperatures. My client is moving here from Alaska and she was telling me how cold she thought it was. That made me feel better as having moved here from Colorado I was thinking I had become a wimp. Our cold is a wet cold that gets you to the bone.

I have a new Sanyo dual camera and I thought I took lots of pictures and just one video. For whatever reason the pictures did not turn out but the video did. It is a short video and a bit choppy but it does give you the feel of the icicle fountain.

Crape Myrtle murder in Spring-Tomball-Magnolia TX!

Thursday, February 3rd, 2011

Crape Myrtle murder has started early in Spring-Tomball-Magnolia TX this year.  I have been driving around watching the landscapers out pruning for the last few weeks.  The sad thing is that there’s absolutely no reason to scalp murder a tree the way they do.  I expect many of you have heard the story of Grandma’s roast.  It seems Grandma cut the end of the roast off, so Mom cut the end of her roast off and so on.  Finally someone got around to asking Grandma why she cut the roast off and her answer was so it could fit in the pan.  To me that’s  a good analogy of the crape myrtle murder that goes on in our area.  From everything I have read and actual experience I cannot see that it does any good to the Crape Myrtle tree.

I made the small video above showing exactly what I’m talking about.  We are having subnormal cold weather right now and I also hope these trees don’t go into shock.

There are a lot of different ideas on how to take care of the crape myrtles.  You see varying degrees of pruning to not pruning at all.  I did quite a bit of research and the general consensus was that they should be lightly pruned.  Over pruning reduces the number of blooms.  I also read where there is a mistaken belief that lopping off the tops of all the branches is necessary to promote flowering.  This is what is called Crape murder.

Flowering on a crape myrtle occurs on the new branches that are produced in the spring; so light pruning in late winter encourages the production of flowering branches.  One of the articles said that if the trees are tipped back lightly after the first flush of bloom, some trees are likely to bloom a second time.  Cutting the trees back heavily can shock them and slow down the growth of flowering branches.  If you don’t prune at all this article said the flower clusters that emerge in the summer will be smaller but more prolific.

From everything I have read over pruning where people chop the crape myrtle back to the knuckle each and every year reduces the number of blooms that will be produced during the summer and the new branches that do grow will be far too long and will not be able to support the weight of heavy blossoms; especially when they get wet.  Thus these long branches often break off during heavy rains and our area is known for those heavy rains.

As I was posting my video I found the video below and he gives some excellent advice on how to take care of your crape myrtles.

Not being originally from this area dealing with crape myrtles has been a new and learning experience for us.  When we first moved here we lopped off those branches every year and then wondered if we had bought dwarf crape myrtle.  The last few years we tried the method that I have described here and not even pruning at all.  You can see from my picture below that we have had a wonderful success not pruning. The picture was taken at dusk as it just set the flowers off.

Cold Facts to save your Spring-Tomball-Magnolia TX foliage!

Cold Facts to save your Spring-Tomball-Magnolia TX foliage!

Last year the Houston Chronicle had a great article about plant survival in freezing temperatures. Since it is almost February I was thinking I was going to get away without having to post about this but it is not to be; we are looking to have several days of frigid temperatures starting tomorrow (lows in the low to mid 20′s). Here in Houston we rarely have frigid temperatures and for sure not several days in a row. I love all the tropical plants that I’m able to grow in Spring and by using what they said I saved my plants last year and plan to again this year.  This year I also have a winter garden going and I sure don’t want to lose my lettuce.

After reading the article I realized that I’ve not been going at this correctly. What you want to do is mulch, water and cover. If it has not rained you need to water first which I had to do last year but this year we have had rain. Water and mulch should be enough for certain plants. Those plants would be abelia, azalea, boxwood, eleagnus, Hawthorne, holly, ligustrum, loropetalum, mahonia, nandina, roses, wax myrtle and yaupon. After an extended freeze these shrubs will probably show foliage damage without cover but should put on new leaves in the spring.

We went the extra step covering plants with fiber row covers, sheets & blankets. This will raise the temperature a few degrees depending on the cover. For even extra protection we added a layer of heavy plastic over the cloth covers and secured it with bricks and stones. The article said not to place plastic directly on the plants. (This is where I have been going astray). My plants are again double wrapped and I feel that again I will have healthy plants after the cold snap. Of course we have moved our potted plants inside.

Protecting your plants from cold weather in Spring TX!!

Protecting your plants from cold weather in Spring TX!!

Do not wash frost or ice off the plants the morning after the freeze. If you wash the frost off it raises the temperature too fast and can damage the plant’s cell tissue. After the frigid temperatures are over  assess the damage but DO NOT prune. The freeze damaged wood will protect live wood farther down the branch (should we have more frigid temperatures).

In the spring prune to green at your normal pruning time. I have always heard mid February for pruning.

I hope this is it for our frigid weather. We have lived here 14 years and I don’t ever remember covering plants this late in the season. I remember a radio commentator years ago saying we have two seasons in Houston summer and January. It looks like winter is going in to February for us this year. Hopefully this will be the last time to cover the plants.

Don’t forget the front door!

Refurbishing your front door in Spring TX!

Refurbishing your front door in Spring TX!

I recently walked refrigerator calendars around my neighborhood and I was AMAZED at the difference I saw in front doors.  In my neighborhood the homes were built between 1997 and 2003 so if a door has not been refinished it probably should have been.  I was leaving my calendars on front doors so you could say I had a bird’s eye view of my neighbor’s front doors.  I saw some doors that had been replaced, some that had been refurbished, others that had been recently painted and I saw a bunch of doors that looked like no one had touched them since 1997.

Almost immediately after walking those calendars I saw an article in the National REALTOR magazine about the Top 5: First Impression Matters.  According to the article this year’s Cost vs. Value Report by Remodeling magazine named the Entry door replacement as the biggest bang for the buck of any other remodeling projects.  With an average cost of $1,218 and a re-sale value of $1,243 the cost recouped was 102.1%. (These were followed by garage door replacement, siding replacement, midrange kitchen remodel and a wood deck addition.) For this article I am however going to center in on the front door.

They did put a caveat though the door needs to match the style of the house. The biggest mistake people make is to choose a door that does not match the neighborhood or home.  In a high end home you will want a nice leaded glass door whereas in a lower priced home it would be more appropriate to replace the door with a regular steel door that is painted a complementary color.  If you are not sure what kinds of doors are in your neighborhood; walk your neighborhood like I did. I found everything!

If you are looking at making a new door purchase this is one of those times where a little online research will take you a long way. You can identify the type of steel whether the door has been primed with a rust inhibitor, how many coats of finish paint have been added and whether it has been insulated. An alternative to finish paint is powder coating.  I guess powder coating is more like glue than paint and holds up better than paint.

As another alternative to replacing your door you could also look at refurbishing your leaded glass doors.  Just today I received a local Woodlands magazine and there is a local company called Rick’s Front Doors that just refinishes doors.  They come to your home take the door off the hinges and replace it with a piece of plastic.  Then they chemically strip the door to its bare wood and wash it to remove any residue. At that point they repair any dings or scratches and then sand it. After that comes staining and protection. They spray 4 coats of premium fast drying marine grade spar urethane with built in UV protection.  When everything’s done they re-hang the door.  The homeowner will usually have bought new hardware that they put on.  I thought this was a cool concept. This was the first time I have heard of this company so I can’t say what kind of work they do but they back their work with a 100% customer guarantee and I thought the price seemed reasonable.  You can check them out at Rick’s Front Door Refinishing.  As I was walking my neighborhood I saw lots of these doors that could stand to get to know Rick.

The front door is the first thing that a buyer sees when they walk up to your house and that first impression can make such a difference.  If the front door does not look cared for the buyer often wonders what else the seller is not taking care of.  So my recommendation is to put a little extra money in to making your front door look spectacular.

Danny's Trix and Kix in Spring TX

Danny’s Trix and Kix is located in Spring TX at the corner of FM 2920 and Meadowhill. (between I-45 and Falvel)

Halloween is of course their busy time of the year as you can see by the full parking lot.  I had to drive around the store twice to find a place to park.

They both rent and sale costumes and have all the accessories to go with your costume including wigs, beard’s, masks, eyelashes, boas, scarves, makeup, hats etc.  They have sizes from infants to plus sizes.

They also have a large gift selection.  They have over the hill gifts, novelties and gag gifts. If you are in to the theatre they have a large selection of make up etc. for stage productions.

If you are interested in magic they have a large magic trick and prank selection.

As you can see they are more than just a Halloween store.     A few years ago we were late to get some patriotic items just before a 4th of July party and thought of them as a last resort.  They still had a large selection of items and we were able to get the patriotic decorations that we wanted.

They have been continually in business since 1976.  Isn’t that incredible! That means that they went through the oil bust of the late 1980′s here in Houston and stayed in business. We moved here in 1996 and I could tell they had been there for a while but I had no idea how long until I asked today.  They are obviously doing something right!

I had asked them if I could take pictures inside their store but some of their costumes have restrictions that don’t allow picture taking.  I can understand that as they have a unique selection of costumes.  They have a large selection of costumes in their windows so you can even window shop (lol).

You can visit their website at www.dannystrixkix.com.

If you are looking for a subdivision that has homes on oversized lots then look no farther. The smaller lots have around 9000 square feet, with the marjority of the homes being on 12,000 to 14,000 square feet lots. I noticed that some of the homes are on lots that are close to 1/2 acre.

Glenn Haven Estates has an active home owners association with committees for Landscaping, Communications, Security and Architectural Control to enforce deed restrictions.

If you are looking for a small serene subdivision that is a decent drive to Houston or IAH then this may be the place for you. I do want to mention again that the subdivision has decent sized lots as that is hard to find in a newer subdivision.

Located in the highly acclaimed Klein ISD; the grade school is Theiss, the intermediate is Doerre and the High school is Klein High School.

They also can provide service for extended warranties. I had always thought when you bought an extended wa

rranty you had to go through the dealer but that is not the case.

Here in this northern area of Spring we have not had many amenities so we were thrilled to see Village Automotive open. One of the automotive services that I have enjoyed is their free customer shuttle. I can drop my car off for an oil change or state inspection and they will bring me back to my home office. When my car is finished they give me a call and pick me back up. What a time saver that has been for me. No longer do I have to sit in sterile waiting rooms waiting for my car to be ready. Although if you have noticed the pictures that I have posted; their waiting room is far from sterile.

Christy runs a faux painting business from an office upstairs and she had a hand in creating this beautiful office. It is unlike any automotive shop I have ever seen. Howmany automotive shops have granite countertops; not to mention the lush powder room? To see more of Christy’s work visit her website at www.wishimay.com.

My husband being an aircraft mechanic is picky about who maintains our vehicles and he has been pleased with Village Automotive. If your car needs service we highly recommend Village Automotive in Spring TX. You can check their website out at www.village-automotive.com.

We have made a couple of cross country moves with our cats and dogs and this post is about some of the lessons we learned.  A lot of these lessons would work for a local move also.

I: Moving your cat.

1.        Invest in a high quality cat carrier.  We made the mistake of buying one that was too big thinking that it would give our cat room to move around.  As they travel they really don’t care about moving around so buy a carrier that is appropriately sized.

2.       Talk to your veterinarian ahead of time so you can get medication, especially if your pet does not like being transported.

3.       You might want to consider buying a restraining harness for your cat.  We found that the rabbit harnesses were the ones that worked the best.  We spent several weeks ahead of time training our cat to use the harness.  She was scared of it to begin with but adjusted to it with time.  This way you will be able to take your cats for walks and get you can be assured they are not going to run away.

4.       If you have a imbedded chip you will want to update the information just in case something happens and your pet gets lost.

5.       Call ahead to find motels that accept cats.

II: Moving your dog.

1.       With a dog you may or may not need a pet carrier.  Our dogs were use to riding in the car and we moved them without a pet carrier.

2.       Purchase a new ID tag for your dog. Put your new address and your cell phone on it.  If your dog has an imbedded chip you will want to update the information.

3.       Talk to your veterinarian ahead of time to get medication if your dog has issues traveling in the car.

4.       Call ahead to find motels that accept dogs.

5.       Moving to the south you will need to immediately get your dog on heart worm preventive medicine.

On the actual moving day you will want to put your pet in a room that is isolated from all the commotion.  You are going to want to put a big note on the door so that the movers know to stay out of that room.

If you are moving to Spring TX during the summer months you are going to have to take special precautions because of the heat.  You could end up having to eat a lot of fast food so that you can keep your pet in air conditioning.

Take all the things your pet will need with you so that they have some things that they are use to in their new home.  Many people lose their pets during the moving process so you will want to take extra precautions to make sure that your pet has an easy transition to your next home.

What to do when you see a bee swarm!!

Tuesday, April 28th, 2009

So what do you do when you see what looks like a giant beehive in your front yard?  My first thought was to grab a bottle of flying insect spray. My husband however happened to know of a bee keeper so we called him instead.

I must say watching him move the swarm to a new home was quite a learning experience. What we thought was a hive was actually a swarm. They swarmed over an old bird nest. It appears that they have been kicked out of their prior castle so these worker bees went with their queen to find a new castle. I for one was not happy about there castle being in my front yard. The bee keeper brought them over a nice 3/2/2 and helped them to get settled.  It was a little smaller than their castle in the air but worked quite nice.

Honey bee swarms are actually not dangerous.  The only time a swarm gets defensive is when they are protecting their hive and their young and since a swarm doesn’t have young nor food supplies they are not easily provoked.  Now our son did get stung when out mowing the yard so maybe the lawn mower provoked them.  He was not taking any chances and decided to wait until the swarm was gone to finish the mowing.

I have a new appreciation for bees after talking to the bee keeper and watching the process.  I did not catch the swarm dropping but you will see one picture with the swarm in the air and the next one the swarm is on the box.

A bee swarm in Spring TX

After getting the swarm down to the box the next step was getting them settled in to their new condo.  You can observe the bees scent-fanning at the entrance to signal the entrance to the new nest as the bees march into their new home. There is one point in the movie where you will see the screen go a little crazy as I was getting away from the bees. According to the beekeeper I was safe but I was not taking any chances.

I was amazed at how comfortable the bee keeper was around the bees. We asked him if he got stung often and he told us no.

Getting the Spring TX bee swarm settled in their new home

When you see the bee keeper pointing he is pointing out a waggle dance. The bees do a waggle dance to share information.

I was a little sad that a small group got left behind.  They huddled as a very small swarm in the tree for a few weeks and then were gone.  I hope they found a larger swarm but I’m not sure what happens to the remnant when they miss the move.

I found a website that you can go to and find a bee keeper should you find yourself with a swarm in your front yard.  After finding out how social honey bees are I’m glad that we helped them find a new condo.  I also found out that there is a shortage of honey bees in the United States so you are being ecologically green and helping our environment also.
