Conroe is located along interstate I-45 about 40 miles north of Houston.  Unlike so much of the area that is unincorporated there is an actual city of Conroe.  With a rich history the city was incorporated back in 1904 and is the country seat for Montgomery County.  In this area a city that is over 100 years old is a very old city for the area.  The city boast easy access to Houston and is only 7 miles away from popular Lake Conroe. The population of the city almost doubled between 2012 and 2000 going from 36,811 residents to 61,533 and growing.  The whole area has been in a huge growth mode as that population figure does not include the much larger unincorporated area that has Conroe as their mailing address. 

The majority of Conroe is located within the Conroe Independent School district with a small northern section of Conroe in the Willis Independent School District

The city was named after Isaac Conroe who was a norther born Union Calvary office and founded a sawmill in the area in 1881. The city was actually first named Conroe Switch but then the name was shorted to Conroe. The local agriculture and timber industries allowed Conroe to experience rapid growth in the early twentieth century.  Timber was the bread and butter until the 1930’s when oil was discovered just seven miles southeast of the town. Almost overnight the effects of the great depression were dwarfed by oil and for a short time boasted more millionaires than any other US City.  The City experienced slow stead growth and during the first decade of the twenty first century Conroe attracted a number of people from Houston who were exiting to the suburbs.  The U.S. Census Bureau gave the area around Conroe and The Woodlands the distinction of being called a “large urbanized transit area.  They si defined as an area having one

During World War II the Montgomery County Airport was built three miles northeast of Conroe on FM 1484. Since 1945 it has served as a local airfield and the name was changed to Lone Star Executive Airport. The name has recently been changed again to the Conroe-North Houston Regional Airport.

The city is served by a number of parks with Candy Cane Park being the largest and the home of The Heritage Museum of Montgomery County.
