Klein is an unincorporated community in the extraterritorial jurisdiction of Houston in Northwest Harris County. It borders Houston to the South and Tomball to the North. In January of 2016 the Klein ISD board of trustees passed a resolution recommending that residents in the zip codes of 77379, 77389 and 77391 use Klein as their postal city. They wanted to put a face on the name of Klein ISD.
The Klein area has transformed from a quiet rural area that was primarily farmed by the descendants of 19th century immigrants into a bustling suburb of Houston.
Klein is named after Adam Klein a German immigrant. Adam Klein and his wife Friederika arrived in the area in 1854 after Adam had success in the California goldfields. Twenty years later they along with many other German immigrants established Trinity Lutheran Church which became the center of religious and social life. Through the efforts of Adam Klein a post office was established in William Blackshear's general store on Spring Cypress Road. This explains the 77391 zip code; which includes no homes in Klein but is the location of the old post office.
In 1938 the 88 square miles of the communities rural school district was named the Klein Independent School District making it the largest district at that time. The areas within the boundaries of Klein ISD have been without a post office since 1906 being served by the post offices of Houston, Spring and Tomball. Even though there is no official post office for Klein, in 1977 Klein TX was officially designated by the state legislature. The schools in Klein ISD have been named for the early settlers whose descendants still reside in the area. The Klein TX designation is an effort to preserve the history and heritage of the area for future generations.
